The Lost Daughters of Nepal

The industry in the trafficking of Nepali girls is a very lucrative business.

Besides this, Nepalese girls are cheaper to buy, much more cooperative and much easier to control and enslave. Girls from the rural regions are known to be much more obedient and considered more attractive for brothel owners who may want to resell them. Nepali girls coming from the rural farming areas, because of their naïveté, are much more easy to cheat and to force into debt bondage. This is because they have very little, if any, education and they usually do not speak any of the native languages of India.

“Annually, according to U.S. Government-sponsored research completed in 2006, approximately 800,000 people are trafficked across national borders, which does not include millions trafficked within their own countries. Approximately 80 percent of transnational victims are women and girls and up to 50 percent are minors,” reports the US Department of State in a 2008 study.

The odds for a girl to escape her life in the brothels, once she is there, is very slim. Only a dismal percentage (6.9%) of brothel owners will voluntarily release one of their girls. 73.7% of all girls trapped inside the brothel system must be rescued if they are ever to reach the outside world again.

In an emmy award winning film, Executive Director of Apneaap Women Worldwide, Ruchira Gupta, goes inside the brothels of Mubai to show the degradation of girls who have been trafficked from Nepal to serve in India’s sex-industy. This is a 8:57 min film excerpt.

OUTRAGE! Key Evidence Does Not Hold Water

by Susan Murphy-Milano

It was the morning of February 18, 2007. Melody Schmitt was walking her dog as she did each morning before going about her daily routine. Her cell phone rang, it startled her. It was a new phone and she had yet to figure out how to turn down the distracting ringer. Melody answered the phone. Melody’s hands trembled as she disconnected the call. At the end of the residential driveway, Melody fell to her knees. All Mothers have a special place where their children always reside when all is well. When a mother loses a child, it is like a violent surgery from within, without anesthetic.

Twenty-one years earlier, almost to the day, Melody gave birth to a beautiful 7 pound boy whom she named Joshua. Joshua Whittier was found dead at 6:30 A.M. on February 18, 2007, in Navarre Beach, Florida. His body was lying face down in the sand at the water’s edge near Juana’s Pagoda Bar. His chin, knees and wrists were scraped as if he had been dragged there. A pack of (dry) cigarettes and a bottle of Corona beer were close by. His wallet, that earlier had contained $900 from a newly cashed paycheck stub, was found up the beach.

The Ugly Link between the Holidays and Abuse

Campaign to tackle domestic violence increases at Christmas

A hard-hitting domestic violence campaign is being launched across West Lancashire in the run-up to Christmas - the busiest time of year for incidents. In West Lancashire, figures from previous years between December and January show an average increase of 22% of reports of domestic violence.

In a bid to tackle this alarming rise during the festive period West Lancashire Community Safety Partnership - of which the District Council is the lead agency - is sending out a warning to perpetrators that it won’t be tolerated.

Victims of domestic violence can contact the West Lancashire Women’s Refuge on 0808 100 3062 or Women’s Aid National on 0808 2000 247. Abusive partners can contact the Respect helpline on 0845 122 8609.
